After our Niagra Falls and Watkins Glen State Park adventures (and scare), we continued heading east through beautiful New York and Massachusetts towards Cape Cod, Massachusetts . This was our first-time to Cape Cod, but we had heard so much about how nice it was, so we decided it was a must-go.
At this point on our road trip, we were ready for a little low-key relaxation time, and that’s what we got in Cape Cod. As I began calling hotels and resorts around “The Cape”, I quickly learned that we were visiting cape cod in the off season. It was Nov 1st, and 3 of the resorts I called were closed for the season. After a few more tries, I found the Capewinds Waterfront Resort, a pet-friendly hotel in Falmouth Cape Cod (one of the larger towns in Southwestern Cape Cod) at a very reasonable price.
When we arrived later that night, we were very pleased with the Capewinds Waterfront Resort. It is very private, with a lot of extra land to walk the dogs and a very peaceful setting on the water. After an action-packed roadtrip up to this point, it was exactly what we needed to unwind.
Although the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, is one of the most popular destinations on Cape Cod, we were very impressed by the western Cape Cod area, including a much shorter drive to beautiful views. If you have the time to drive through the entire Cape Cod peninsula (about a 2 hour drive to the point), then I would definitely do it, but we were able to enjoy all that the western Cape had to offer until next time we visit.
Things to See in West Cape Cod
Just south of Falmouth, on the Southwestern point of Cape Cod is a little town called Woods Hole. If you want to eat some good seafood, this is a great place to go. We ate at Fishmonger’s Cafe where I had the Lobster Melt. It was full of lobster meat, covered in melted cheese, and absolutely delicious!
Also, down in Woods Hole is the start (or end) of the Shining Sea Bikeway, a 11-mile paved path that runs from Woods Hole to North Fulmouth. In the fall it was beautiful. You’ll ride through a wooded path and along the coastline with beautiful sea views. We had our bikes with us on the trip, but you can check out Falmouth for rentals if needed.
Cape Cod is full of lighthouses, and we got to visit the functioning Nobska lighthouse near our resort in Falmouth. This is a must when visiting Cape Cod.
The great thing about being in Cape Cod in the off-season was that there were no waits or crowds. On the other hand, a lot of things were closed. We had our hearts set on going to the Ice Cream Sandwich shop in the town of Sandwich, Cape Cod, but it was closed for the season.
But, if you are looking for a low-key, scenic, relaxing place to visit, Cape Cod will not disappoint, especially in the “off season”.
